62 Mini-Triathletes Finish Strong

It was a foggy start to the 2nd Annual Nottingham Kids Triathlon, but that didn't dampen the spirits of 62 mini-triathletes as they completed the 50 meter swim, 2 mile bike and 1/2 mile run. Congratulations to all of our mini-triathletes, including many first-time triathletes!

We would also like to take an opportunity to thank the parents, local businesses and community volunteers without whose help an event like this could not be possible.

Thank you to the parents of our mini-triathletes for encouraging your child's interest in an event that emphasizes health, self-estem, self-confidence and yes, fun. A special thanks to Melissa Straley for securing so many of our great door prizes, and to Liz Dolecki, Julie Pistorio and Kelley Walters for organizing the yummy post-race refreshments.

Thank you to the local businesses that provided financial assistance or race-day support including All American Bicycle Center, Catonsville Homes, Streamlines Swim & Sport, The Greene Turtle and The Little Gym of Mount Airy.

Thank you to the local businesses that generously donated door prizes including Bent LLC, brian lausch photography, Concetta's Italian Grocer, Deja Va, Federated Insurance of Frederick, Laurienzo Brick Oven Cafe, Old Towne Restaurant, Retro-Metro, The Hive, The Snack Shack at Nottingham Swim Club, The Vintage Coffee House, Twin Arch Barber & Stylists and Walmart. A special thanks to SK Printing for their help again this year with the Nottingham Kids Triathlon race t-shirt.

And last but not least, thank you to the community volunteers for keeping our mini-triathletes safe so they in turn could have fun: student volunteers Julian Garfield, Marissa Schumacher, Brooke St. Martin and Cazmier Tymoch; the scouts and families of Cub Scout Pack 1191; Kevin Costin and Tom Walters of the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company; and Brook Donovan of the Howard County Police Department.

We are already thinking ahead to the 3rd Annual Nottingham Kids Triathlon. Only 364 days to go!

FAQs

What time do I need to arrive on race day?
Plan to arrive by 8:15 AM the morning of the race. This will provide enough time to check-in your child, have them body-marked and then set-up their transition area. To help minimize the number of cars in the pool parking lot and along the adjacent streets, please consider walking or riding with your child to the pool rather than driving if you are a Nottingham resident.

What should I pack on race day?
Two towels—one for the pool and one to sit on in the transition area
Goggles
Swim suit
Swim cap
Socks
Shirt for after the swim to wear on the bike and run
Bicycle
Helmet (required)
Sneakers for cycling and running
Water bottle to drink from during transitions
Sunblock
Dry clothes for after the race

What is body-marking?
During check-in, each child will be body-marked with his/her race number on one arm and one leg, and his/her age on the back of the lower leg. In addition, each child will be assigned a race bib. This bib must be worn and visible on the front of their body either pinned to a piece of clothing or attached to a race number belt during the bike and run. Safety pins will be available at check-in.

How many lengths of the pool is the 50 meter swim?
The Nottingham Swim Club pool is 25 meters. Children will swim two lengths of the pool. Children will be grouped by age in swim waves and each child will have his/her own lane. The swim will be an in-water start—no one may jump or dive in. Children in the older age groups will swim first, followed by the younger children in descending age group order. There will be a 5 minute interval between the start of each swim wave. Parents are welcome to assist their children in the water during the swim. Kickboards will also be available.

What are the bike and run courses?
Bike course: Turn right out of the pool parking lot onto Kingsbridge Terrace. Turn right onto Locksley Lane. At the Catonsville Homes model, turn left onto Kings Forest Trail and continue until the last right (Scarlett Drive). Turn right and continue to the stop sign. Turn left back onto Kings Forest Trial and retrace your path back to the pool parking lot.

Run course: Run to the bottom of the pool parking lot. Cross over the grass and sidewalk onto Longbow Road. Continue straight on Longbow Road to the bottom of the hill by the pond. Turn around and run back.

Maps of both the bike and run courses will be posted on the web site shortly.

Please be sure to review the courses with your child prior to the event. There will be volunteers along the course, however, the roads will not be closed to traffic. Parents are welcome to ride/run along with their children to help them feel comfortable.

What does the race fee cover?
The race fee covers race liability insurance and costs associated with operating the pool. All mini-triathletes will receive a Nottingham Kids Triathlon t-shirt, finisher's medal and other goodies.

Proceeds from additional tickets sold for the iPod shuffle raffle will be donated to The Erik Lerch Foundation.

Have a question not answered above? Email the Race Director.

Giving Back

Thanks to the generisoty of our sponsors (The Greene Turtle, Illiano & Sweet, J&P Pizza, All American Bicycle Center, The Snack Shack, and brian lausch photography) the Inaugural Nottingham Knights & Maidens Triathlon was able to break even with the race related expenses. The special edition ipod shuffle raffle item donated by brian lausch photography raised $90, all of which is being donated to The Erik Lerch Foundation.

We are looking forward to next year and growing the event. Our goal is to double the size of the triathlon and introduce more kids to the sport of triathlons and help support the community at the same time.

Your involvement with your kid’s at the Inaugural Nottingham Knights & Maidens Triathlon shows your supportiveness of your child’s need for a healthy active lifestyle and triathlon as a new challenging goal for their physical fitness. The triathlon intended to expose our youngest triathletes to basic elements of triathlon and give them a taste of the unique sense of accomplishment that comes with finishing a triathlon.

We hope to see you all again next year!

Thanks to All

Thank you all for coming out and racing in the Inaugural Nottingham Knights & Maidens Triathlon.

I am so proud of all of the kids. The race course was not easy, as defiantly was NOT flat. But they pushed through and crossed the finish line running.

Thanks to all of the parents, volunteers and sponsors to all of their support. It could not be done without you.

Hope to see you all again next summer!

Christy
